In the exhibition’s handwritten letters section, TPL challenges viewers to decipher a reproduction of a crossed letter — a type of manuscript that uses two sets of writing on top of one another — written by Elizabeth Wainwright, a British woman who settled in Canada in the 19th century.
Cherayil said because postage was expensive in 1836, when the letter was written, people would write in one direction across a paper, then turn the page to another right angle to write additional lines on top.
“It looked crazy. It was almost impossible to read,” Cherayil said.
